The Resistance
Entirely through legal means, we intend to thwart the plans of those companies proposing to construct the scores of wind-turbines on Kythera and export that power off the island. Kythera itself would require only four or five large wind-turbines to cover its energy needs, so Kythera's skyline is to be sacrificed for the energy needed by other areas of Greece.
You can find out how to assist in opposing the construction of wind-power stations on Kythera on this page.
Add Your Name to THE RESISTANCE PETITION!
If you are against the current proposals for massive wind-power stations on Kythera, you can add your name to this proposal. By the end of 2010 we hope to have reached our target of 1000 names. Let your friends know about the petition as well!

it's simply insensible that a small and beautiful island such as Kythera should suffer for the need of all Greece!
-
Dont destroy our beautiful KYTHERA
-
Save Kythira from wind turbines and protect the native birds.
-
Stop these ugly things being built, it will just spoil one of the most pristine islands in greece.
-
The noise from these turbines alone is mind disturbing and being close to them as I witnessed here in Australia is playing on the nerves of persons living close to them.
In fact people on farms with these things close by have had to move into close towns away from them for health reasons . this is also another good reason for not having these monstrocities for power reasons at all. -
These wind-turbines are nothing short of ugly and do not belong on the beautiful island of Kythera.
-
Who ever made the decesion, then let them put these monstrosities in there own back yard.
-
strange way to think about sustainability...
-
What have we done to deserve this !I urge all kytherians and friends around the world to stand up and be heard.Although we do not live there our hearts have not left.Keep it a place for the following generations to enjoy.
-
No way and that's that. we have kept the island away from commercial tourism to conserve it's beauty and this is what we get in return a dumping ground for the rest of Greece.Perhaps Santorini would be good spot.
-
My father showed me this beautiful island as a child and we have returned many times.I would hope that my children and there children will be able to enjoy what we did for many years to come.
I believe Greece has many un inhabital islands how about placing them there.
All those bureaucrats out there should place them in there backyard and see how it would feel. -
Each year Kythera hosts the millions of BIRDS which arrive on KYTHERA as part of their flight path during their annual migration from Russia and northern Europe. Immagine the destruction caused by these wind turbines! The person doing much research on the path of these birds in KLythera is Theo Cominos. tkominos@hotmail.com

This project is conflicting with the idea of sustainable energy production and saving. Where is the benefit for the local people? Where the participation of the locals?
-
NOOOOOO WAYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
OXI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
A beautiful place that produces beautiful people.
-
Caring about the environment should involve protecting nature! I am all for renewable energy, but wind turbines can be built in less attractive places or out IN THE SEA.
As Joni Mitchell said: "
How long? Short sighted businessmen!" -
I think Kythera is too beautiful to have a multitude of wind farms. Restrict them to supply the needs of the Island only'
-
Once the Island is spoiled there will be no way to fix it. Leave it for everyone to enjoy.
-
We visited this beautiful island for the first time this May and were stunned and thrilled by its natural, unspoiled beauty. Therefore we urge you not to spoil Kythera with the visual pollution of wind mills.
-
Against this proposal. A beautiful island that should remain so for generations to come.
-
Sad to see short term thinking with long term implications, all too sad to contemplate the environmental loss. There is increasing evidence that wind farms cause adverse health effects for local inhabitants ie dizziness, migraines and loss of hearing and balance.
-
Rule # 1 NO Windmills
Rule # 2 NO Windmills
Rule # 3 Revert to rule # 1 -
why not on the mainland?
-
no windmills on our beautiful island...preserve its natural beauty for future generations to admire and enjoy.
-
Protect this gorgeous island from the rest of the country and its problems. this is merely short term thinking with long term implications for such a unique and pristine island.
-
Please preserve Kythera for all Kytherians now and in the future. The beauty of the Island must not be interfered with. The humming of wind turbines must not disturb the serenity of Kythera.
-
OXI! NO! NOPE! NADA! NO WAY!
-
Wind power is an important and clean method to generate electricity and I have no problem with having turbines on the island. What I fear is that like all other public projects in Greece it is ill considered with little if any public participation and poorly planned.
Pollution takes many forms and visual pollution is one of the worst for our precious island. If 200 turbines are to be placed on the island my worst fears will have cone to fruition. -
Kythera is an island of rich cultural history and natural beauty. It is absolutely disgusting that this could possibly be sacrificed. It is about money hungry people destroying Kythera's natural beauty. Lets not let anybody be fooled about what this is really about.
-
would prefer wind turbines in the sea
-
Please preserve the natural beauty of Kythera..these windpower stations will undoubtedly detract from the island.
Thank you for the opportunity to comment of this severe prospect. May the governing bodies embrace our concerns and find a mutually acceptable alternative. Good luck! -
Preserve the natural beauty of Kythera: land of some of my ancestors. Protect this little island from the forces of corporate environmental destruction, masquerading as 'green' politics and support a more equable way of creating sustainable energy without ruining a place of natural beauty!
-
A big OXI to wind turbines! Let's preserve the beauty of the island, Kythera, and protect it for the generations to come.
There are other ways to generate power! -
I am totally opposed to sacrificing the beauty of Kythera in order to generate electricity for other areas of Greece. Those who live there and those who visit regularly should be the ones to decide what is best for the island.
-
Don't be fooled by the big corporations. They make money at your island's expense, and heritage is worth more than their fat pay checks. The land owners will also benefit as will those making the roads. EU money cannot be wasted, and the carbon footprint created in producing the turbines outweighs the relatively short term "benefits". hugel

no to wind farms
-
Please you can update and move forward with the latest of the Technology & inovations & Enviromental issues but at the same time you have not any right or excuses to destroy the one of the very few unattached original Greek islands of Greece. Kythera should
keep the harmony between the Modern and Traditional Style.
It is a World Heritage unique place and all people involved have to do
their best to Prevent- Protect -Prevail any long term permanand damages
to the one of the most beatiful & peacefull places
on Earth.
If you all are interested to leave a legacy to your children ,grand
children ,great grand children and so on...
PLEASE THINK PLAN AND APROVE THE FUTURE VERY CAREFULLY.
Keep the Harmony that Balance between Old and New 50-50.
God Bless you all .Use your Windsom....love...passion...hope...Believes...ambitions
..Valious..about our treasured island of Tsirigo-Kythera.
Thanks -
Stop energy factories in Kytheria and Tehuantepec, Mexico!!!
-
The previous comments are really important: most people in western countries could easily cut their energy use by 20% just by riding bikes, having shorter showers, turning down the heat and air-conditioning, switching off the standby modes on their TVs, and taking local holidays more often. Why aren't there public awareness campaigns? This would be much more effective than building wind-towers.
-
Before Electricty Kythera existed and coped so the people of Kythera should not now be bullied into being a platform for the profit of these corporations. I suggest that the people choose rather to simplify their ways of living, composting all organic waste(kitchen, human, etc) to enrich the soil for food growing, re-using water, recycling everything, etc and so by doing this become a model for sustainable living.....if the greater population were already doing this, this extra energy would not be necessary....instead of the headlong rush into oblivion, we have to stop, reassess and change our habits....See Vandana Shiva working in India and how small projects have creaated fundamental and significant changes. Development here meaning something very different from what it means in the west!!
-
I will be going to kythera during summer, to visit a friend of mine. He's native to this island, and will be doing research supported by the EU to find out how global warming as effected the local farmers on this island. For sure we have to support them, instead of abusing their small island for mass consumption of energy.
-
I belive in some another solution too.
-
I THINK WE NEED TO REVIEW OUR ENERGY POLICIES
BUT
windfarm sites need to be thorougly studied before the windmills are implemented. The rotors can just cut some birds, like gryphons, which do not fear the windfarms, in half while in mid air. Other birds simply avoid the areas and lose them as hunting ground during their migration.
On the other hand, landscape is our natural heritage too! If we change the face of the planet, our one lives will be much sader and uglier! -
Let's not let them do it,renewable is fine, but if it is in unison with the rest and pro local
-
another solution is possible!
-
I fight with many good associations to avoid windfarms disfigure the Loire Valley protected by UNESCO. They have no interest...don't use EU money to spoil that preserved isle..you have so many sun, use its energy by building a big solar farm for the local energy consumption
-
we should protect the nice things which we have got on this earth... than we don´t have to regret afterwards, that we didn´t act...
-
its seems like corporate business as usual. if the practices are not changed now, then when...
-
Stop this energy interest, what about the interest of the people living in the island. I bet the guys sponsoring the project do not live in Kythera.
