What You Can Do

1. Join our Team!

This website and the poster and sticker campaign we've started is only the beginning. We need helpers to research the issues, write or edit articles, design advertisements and if possible to find funding for our campaign. If you'd like to help please send us a mail and we'll take it from there.

2. Disemination of Information

Posters, stickers, info-advertisements and websites like this one are the obvious means of making the plans of The Corporations known. Our posters and stickers are already visible in most villages in shops and on cars. If you can help distribute them on Kythera, you can print them out yourself (it's possible to buy water-resistant blank stickers for your ink-jet printer) from this two-page PDF, if not let us know by sending us a mail and we'll try to send you some. Even now, years after the first public applications were made to erect wind-towers, the majority of the population of Kythera is clueless to the extent of the planned wind-farms. By informing your relatives and friends on the island, you can play an important role in the protest.

3. Pressure on Politicians

We are preparing pre-texted letters in English and Greek which can be printed out and sent to key politicians on Kythera. The receipt of such letters will remind the politicians there of the interest of Diaspora Kytherians. When you are on the island you can approach the Mayor and Deputy Mayor and anyone you know in office and impress on them your feelings on the subject of wind-farms.

4. Pressure on the Wind-Farm Companies

We are also preparing pre-texted letters in English and Greek to the senior management of The Corporations which would turn Kythera into a wind-farm dump. These companies have also applied to construct their tower in hundreds of other regions of Greece and perhaps, if they are made aware of the potential of protest on Kythera, they will concentrate on pursuing their plans in (hopefully more suitable) areas of Greece.

5. Legal Challenges to the EU

Should the Greek Government give the go-ahead for the construction of wind-farms on Kythera, one of the most promising ways of blocking their construction is to convince the European Union of Kythera's crucial position as a resting station for migratory birds flying from Europe to Africa and back, and the disruption of that pattern the wind-farms will cause. Fund-raising is presently going on to finance an official study of that subject. You can read more about it in this pdf which also has information about how you can donate.

6. Creating an "Energy Equation"

Many of us are now convinced that, because of the extensive infrastructure needed on Kythera to enable wind-farms to be built there, along with the energy-intensive requirements of the generators' production, construction, maintenance and final decommissioning, that there is a strong possibity that the proposed Wind-Farms might not even finally produce as much energy as is used to create them. The maths is complex, and we need help from professionals. As soon as we have approximate numbers we will attempt to get the checked and confirmed by an appropriate university department so that we can make the findings public. Even though The Corporations probably don't care much if their wind-farms make ecological sense - their maths will have been confined to determining the profitability - they might still be shamed into withdrawing their proposals for Kythera if we can make public the evidence of "The Energy Equation". If you have the expertise to help us calculate the energy equation (or if you know someone who does) then please contact us.
